Irish Innovation Centre

- by Dave

Irish Innovation Centre Logo
Scapegoat Design is sponsoring a new initiative - The Irish Innovation Centre and we aim to provide out of the box design solutions initially with many more ideas in the pipeline once The Centre has launched. So what is the IIC all about?

We don't want to give too much away at this stage but we will soon be inviting people to 'come and play'. If you have an idea and you think it can be built in three months, let's give it a go. Collective expertise and networks will get this economy moving again. Who's behind the IIC? An eclectic mix of personalities from many different industries, all of whom are giving their time for free to this project.

IIC will be launching soon and You will be invited to get involved. In the meantime here's the first draft of the logo posted above. Certain elements may be subject to change but we'd like your feedback. Love it? Hate it? Let us know. The design rationale is creativity, thinking with heart as well as the head, all directions are possible and it's inspired by the wonderful Joan Miro and Cesar Manrique.

If you like illustration...

...then you really should check out Scamp, an Irish illustration blog. It seems to feature plenty of guys from the Illustrators Ireland website and they always showcase loads of interesting work as well as plenty of links to interesting and thought provoking art from around the world.

Definitely a great way to spend a lunch break!

It's all in the Tone

- by Dawn

For all you type lovers out there I'd recommend a look through the site Village. You'll find an eclectic mix of type design along with traditional design. The style of the site is a little more casual than the norm. Visiting this site I feel like a child in a candy shop, there's an option to grab and move panels around the screen on the homepage.

And if you're a real nerd (nerds are cool these days, it's ok) you could even buy yourself a bag screen printed with metallic silver and fluorescent orange.

Who wouldn't be inspired!

If I had to pick a favourite, today it would be Stag Stencil.

Stag Stencil Bold was commissioned for Esquire Magazine, and Light was commissioned by Formula One. Both clients required a masculine font with obvious constructed elements.
But with this selection available my favourite is liable to change.

Scapegoat is...on Facebook

- by Dave

Scapegoat Facebook Page

A lot of our clients often ask us about Social Media. Is it worthwhile having a Facebook page? Should we be on Twitter? What about LinkedIn? We often advise them that they can be useful but a lot of it is dependent on their business.

Scapegoat now have a Facebook page - we're not 100% sure what to do with it yet but I guess it is a chance for us to put our money where our mouth is! If any of our readers could 'like', 'become a fan' or just have a look at the page that would be very much appreciated.

You can click on this link and see what's going on. And please feel free to make any comments but no profanity!

Be Creative

- by Dave

Thought BubbleOur tagline is 'Be Creative' and we use this with our logo whenever possible. Does it stand for anything or is it just a meaningless jingle? I like to think of it as our philosophy, that we try to be creative in everything we do, not just our design work. We try and encourage our clients to be creative as well and not just do what is expected.

So how can you be creative in your day to day work? Some examples include:

1. Review the text on your company website? Does it say anything interesting, illuminating or different from your competitors? Is it just a series of cliches and tired well-worn phrases? Can you improve on it?

2. Have you a presentation to make? Dispense with Powerpoint and try using props or visual aids instead. Endless Powerpoint slides can be tedious and mind-numbing whereas people will remember visuals and images.

3. What does your company's promotional material say about its philosophy? Are they memorable and striking or are they devoid of personality?

4. What is your company's philosophy? Can you easily articulate in 10 words or less? Can it be understood by a 10 year old?

These are just a couple of basic examples but there are loads of different ways to 'Be Creative. All it requires is some spare time, a bit of thought and a little imagination. I'd love to hear some of your own thoughts on it.
