Get to work!
May 10, 2010 - by Dave

Whenever I look up a website from a business card that I have received I am always amazed at the amount of them that are 'Under Construction' or 'Coming Soon'. Sometimes the 'soon' in question can be a year or more!
I understand how this happens. People are busy, it's always hardest to work on your own site, don't have the time, blah, blah, blah. Let's face it - all excuses really. In 2010 it's crazy for a business to not have a functioning website and sometimes these 'Under Construction' pages don't even have contact details.
We receive several enquiries through our website every week and if it works for our business there's no reason it won't work for your business too. So if you've been procrastinating delay no longer and give Scapegoat Design a call on 01 676 2446.

Make and Do Typography

Two Estonian designers have hit on a niche in creating crafty custom type that really delivers on message. Check out handmadefont.com

I really love this image of the guys at work, proof that the skills of using a Stanley knife, lighter and photography against some coloured paper are not dead and gone in this digital age. This should touch the hearts of all designers out there.

And the end results are pretty impressive even if it look like there just playing with their food. Fun.

Sun, Sea and Scenery
Apr 12, 2010 - by Lee

This might not be local to Ireland and not everyone will see it but I was lucky enough to be able to visit this exhibition of sheer creativity, originality and down right beauty. ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ illuminated an already sun kissed beach in Perth Australia.
The aim of this blog is not intended to make you run to the nearest travel agent and invest in new flip flops but rather demonstrate the theory that artists and designers have been expressing for generations, Art is not restricted to a canvas, nor confined within four wall of a national museum.
The Annual ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ turns iconic Cottesloe Beach into an open-air art gallery and this year exhibited 64 pieces by 60 different artists, each with their own take on what signified beauty to them.
Local artist Geoffery Drake-Brockman's sculpture is a solar powered counter. Everyone that walks through its archway will improve the tally. Not to mention the kids who ran through it about twenty times in five minutes. "It's about the individual's choice as to whether they are counted or not," he said. To some this is seen as a statement about surveillance, or they can just see it as light-hearted.
Argentinian artist Alejandro Propato is one of these international artists. His piece - Arte de las Playas was easily the largest of the displays, with over 20 coloured flags flying over the sand. His manipulation of the wind as it fought its way through the flags to me represented his respect for nature and how life can be the exhibition itself.
Other pieces on display include a large caterpillar-like creation made entirely of colourful bottle tops, an invisible shed and a pearl necklace made of crayfish floats. A truly remarkable exhibition of space, colour, natures elements and most of undeniable beauty that in my view is a shame to take down.
PS Lee submitted this blog while on extended holidays in Australia. True dedication! Dave.

Be Creative
Apr 6, 2010 - by Dave
Our tagline is 'Be Creative' and we use this with our logo whenever possible. Does it stand for anything or is it just a meaningless jingle? I like to think of it as our philosophy, that we try to be creative in everything we do, not just our design work. We try and encourage our clients to be creative as well and not just do what is expected.
So how can you be creative in your day to day work? Some examples include:
1. Review the text on your company website? Does it say anything interesting, illuminating or different from your competitors? Is it just a series of cliches and tired well-worn phrases? Can you improve on it?
2. Have you a presentation to make? Dispense with Powerpoint and try using props or visual aids instead. Endless Powerpoint slides can be tedious and mind-numbing whereas people will remember visuals and images.
3. What does your company's promotional material say about its philosophy? Are they memorable and striking or are they devoid of personality?
4. What is your company's philosophy? Can you easily articulate in 10 words or less? Can it be understood by a 10 year old?
These are just a couple of basic examples but there are loads of different ways to 'Be Creative. All it requires is some spare time, a bit of thought and a little imagination. I'd love to hear some of your own thoughts on it.
